Indian and Pakistani forces exchanged gunfire along the Kashmir border on Saturday in a new round of fighting, the Indian Army said in a statement.
This most recent conflict comes after a deadly attack in a well-known tourist destination in Indian-administered Kashmir earlier this week that killed 26 people. Tensions between the two nearby nations have significantly increased as a result of the incident.
Islamabad has vehemently denied the Indian government’s accusation that the attack was planned by organizations with ties to Pakistan. On social media, a group identifying as the “Kashmir Resistance” asserted its responsibility. This group, also referred to as “The Resistance Front,” may function as a stand-in for well-known militant groups with headquarters in Pakistan, including Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen, according to Indian security agencies.
Both countries have implemented retaliatory measures in the wake of the bombing. Pakistan retaliated by blocking Indian airlines from using its airspace after India declared that the Indus Waters Treaty, a crucial agreement governing the two nations’ shared rivers, would be suspended.
India and Pakistan have long been at odds over the Kashmir region, with both countries claiming complete territorial claims and controlling various industries. After India revoked Kashmir’s special constitutional status in 2019, tensions that had been simmering for decades became much more intense, resulting in widespread unrest and an increase in militant activity.
